What adaptations get wrong.

Think about a game, book, or series you loved that has an adaptation that left you wondering why it disappointed you.

The animation was fine. The voice cast was fine. Everything was fine.

And it still felt wrong.

It's never about what was kept. It's about what was cut. And you can feel it even when you can't point at the exact moment it broke.

I lose literal sleep over this because I never want Game Over to make you feel that way. Game Over isn't a game. It's a manga about being inside one. Every arc drops you into a new game genre, and if I don't get the balance right between pulling you into that immersion and letting the manga still be a manga, everything falls apart. So I have spent years pulling apart adaptations to understand exactly what breaks and what holds.

First, characters are our connection to the story and the world. When one gets cut or flattened, the ending has to diverge, and sometimes that divergence is enough to make you walk away from something you were genuinely excited about. I have literally stopped watching an anime mid-season because one character was missing. Not because anything else was wrong. Because the story I loved could not be the story I loved without them.

Second, the adaptations that make us fall in love all over again don't just preserve the original. They figure out what made it special and then use everything the new medium has to amplify it. When that piece is missing, the whole thing feels flat even if you can't explain why. And when it's there, it can take a story you already loved and make it radiant. Final Fantasy just isn't the same without the Crystal Theme. That principle scales to everything.

Third, the adaptation cannot be blindly faithful to the original. Faithfulness sounds like the goal, but the best adaptations aren't faithful copies. They're translations. They find what made the original special and use the strengths of the new medium to take it somewhere the original couldn't go on its own. Fans end up appreciating both for the uniqueness each offers because of their mediums, not in spite of them.
