Designing Kyoko for Game Over Level 8

Character design is one of my favorite parts of making manga because clothing can tell you a lot about someone before they ever say a word.

For Game Over Level 8, the entire cast is getting a makeover inspired by the exaggerated fashion and color of the 1980s dating sim world. Most of the characters are leaning hard into bright colors, bold silhouettes, shiny fabrics, and ridiculous accessories.

Kyoko needed something completely different.

Kyoko's redesign for Jade's original manga series Game Over.

Her Level 8 design uses a much more restrained 1980s Japanese fashion aesthetic. She’s still stylish, but the oversized jacket, wide-leg trousers, layered blouse, and softer palette make her feel more withdrawn than the rest of the cast.

That contrast matters because Kyoko is at a very different point in her character arc.

She’s spent a long time being angry about what has happened to her, especially after everything involving Tristan. In Level 8, she’s becoming more introspective and starting to reconsider what actually matters to her.

I wanted her new character design to reflect that change without losing the things that make her immediately recognizable. Her pink ponytail, old-school bangs, green eyes, and signature accessories aren’t going anywhere.

One of the most interesting challenges with manga character design is figuring out how much story you can communicate through silhouette, posture, color, and fashion alone.

I went much deeper into those choices, including some details you probably wouldn’t notice just from looking at the finished art, over in the Adventurer’s Guild.
